Meet Maria & the Spaces She Creates
I’m Maria Baula-Schuh — an artist at heart, a traveller, and a lifelong lover of dance, nature, and meaningful connection.
When I first arrived in Nelson, British Columbia in 2000, the town’s funky, creative spirit wrapped itself around me. The sense of community, artistry, and closeness to nature felt like home right away — and it still does.
Over time, that love for place became something tangible: spaces created with care, where people can slow down, feel at ease, and truly belong.
In the heart of downtown Nelson, I transformed a charming 20th-century heritage building into Mistiso’s Place — a collection of boutique suites developed thoughtfully, one by one, blending comfort, character, and artistic flair while honouring the building’s history.
Just outside town, surrounded by forest and fresh air, Morning Star Bunkieland offers a quieter rhythm — cozy log cabins and artistic glamping spaces designed for rest, reconnection, and time in nature.
Across all of these spaces, my love for travel and art lives in the details. Many of the images, textures, and décor come from places I’ve explored around the world — blending cultures, colours, and traditions into rooms that feel warm, playful, and alive. Earthy tones and soft touches invite calm, creativity, and joy.
Guests often tell me they feel at home and at peace the moment they arrive — that they can sense the care and intention woven into each space. That means everything to me.
Hosting, for me, is personal.
My promise is simple and sincere: thoughtful comfort, genuine care, and a place where you belong — whether you’re staying downtown or escaping into nature.
These are not just places to stay.
They are spaces created to help you relax, recharge, and reconnect — and I can’t wait to welcome you.
Mistiso
The word Mistiso (mist-tee-so) comes from the Spanish word “mestizo,” which translates into “hybrid’; a person of mixed ancestry, reflecting the theme found within Maria’s eclectic establishment.
One of the many highlights Maria experiences running this exciting hospitality home is the connection she makes with her guests. She loves to hear about what attracts them to Nelson and what they discover amongst their adventures in the Koots!
As an added bonus guests are also offered an opportunity to learn partner dancing and connect with Nelson’s thriving dance scene. Be sure to let Maria know if you’re interested to check out the local dance scene!
Mistiso’s employees are conscientious and committed workers, cheerful, friendly, and happy to give tips and personal recommendations based both on the guest’s interest and our insider knowledge of the town.
If you are considering a visit to Nelson, we would love to connect with you to help you plan the perfect trip. Feel free to contact us with any questions you may have. It is our delight to be of service!
